Key Highlights of Pergamon
- The Acropolis: Sits high above the modern town. It features the steepest ancient theater in the world, the foundations of the Altar of Zeus, and royal palaces.
- The Asklepieion: An early healing sanctuary and medical center where therapies included sound, water, and sleep.
- The Red Basilica: A massive Roman temple originally built to worship Egyptian gods.
- Parchment Invention: Legend says parchment (charta pergamena) was invented here because Egypt stopped exporting papyrus to rival their great library.
