Cappadocia is the ancient and modern name of a remarkable region in Central Anatolia. The name of Cappadocia is believed to come from the Persian language (Catpa-tuka: The land of beautiful horses).
When the volcanoens in the region were active millions of years ago, the lava which poured out covered all previously formed hills and valleys, forming a high plateau.
This newly formed plateau consists mainly of tuff (stock rock) and some rare layers of basalt (hard rock). The destruction of the tuff and the basalt layers by erosion (heavy rains and melting snow) and sharp temperature changes has continued for thousands of years and is still in process today.
